What is a Memo Deal?
A Memo Deal is an electronically signed split sheet. It records who took part in a song (lyricist, composer, beatmaker, musician, singer), each person's percentage of the songwriting rights, the song title, and the date and place of the session. Everyone signs before leaving the studio, and each person receives the signed PDF by email.
Why do a split sheet on the day of the session?
Because it is the only moment when everyone agrees and remembers who did what. Months later, when the song is registered or starts earning, memories drift: the forgotten musician, the 50/50 that becomes 60/40. A paper signed on the day prevents the dispute and becomes the basis for registering the work.
Does a Memo Deal replace registering the song with my collecting society?
No. The Memo Deal records the agreement between you; the song still has to be registered with your collecting society (PRS for Music, ASCAP, BMI, SACEM, GEMA…), using the same shares. With a signed Memo Deal, that registration is a matter of copying the splits. Muzisecur subscribers can have the work registered with SACEM straight from their catalogue.
How binding is a Memo Deal signature?
Each signer receives a code by email before signing, and the document is dated and time-stamped. It is an electronic signature: in the EU, the eIDAS regulation (Article 25) forbids denying it legal effect as evidence solely because it is electronic, and UK and US law also recognise electronic signatures. A Memo Deal sets a provisional split: it does not replace a publishing agreement or a lawyer in a dispute.
Do my co-writers need an account?
No. Only the person who creates the Memo Deal needs an email address to log in. The others sign on your phone in the studio, or with the link they receive by email if they are remote.
How much does Memo Deal cost?
3 Memo Deals are free every month, no credit card needed. After that, it is €2.99 per Memo Deal. Muzisecur subscribers get unlimited Memo Deals.
Can a musician with no share be on the Memo Deal?
Yes. A musician or singer can be listed at 0%: their participation in the session is recorded and they sign like everyone else. The shares of the rights holders must add up to 100%.
What if we get the shares wrong?
You can correct the Memo Deal until everyone has signed. A correction cancels the signatures already made: everyone signs the new version again, so nobody signs a document they have not seen.
Which languages does Memo Deal support?
Memo Deal is available in French, English, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Italian and Russian. The signed document and the emails are written in the language chosen on the site.
